Summary of major acts of terrorism against Cuba
(1990-2000)
Since 1959, counterrevolutionary groups created and directed by the CIA, have been engaged in numerous acts of terrorism, which have resulted in the loss of life and loss of property in our country.
By the beginning of the 90's, aroused by the fall of the Socialist camp, these terrorist groups intensified, from US territory and other bases of operations in Central America, violent actions against the Cuban people and their leaders.
What follows are some of the acts relating to terrorism:
July 17, 1990. By the maneuvers of two republican legislators from Florida, Ileana Ross y Connie Mack, then president George Bush, freed the Cuban American terrorist Orlando Bosch, whose bombs in 1976 destroyed a Cuban passenger airliner on flight, killing 73 innocent people.
Octuber 14, 1990. Two armed terrorists, disembark in Santa Cruz del Norte. These two men were organized in Miami and had orders to execute violent actions. They were heavily armed and were carrying false documents given to them in Miami.
May 15, 1991. José Basulto, ex mercenary in the Bay of Pigs invasion, and agent of the CIA, with a history of terrorism, begins the operations of "Hermanos al Rescate" Playa and asks and receives from George Bush 3 small US air force planes model 0-2, the same one used during the war in El Salvador. The congresswoman Ileana Ross makes a public campaign for the planes, and they are given to the organization. On July 19, 1992 photos of the 3 planes given to the counterrevolutionary group appear in the Miami Herald, clearly showing the insignia of the USAF.
September 17, 1991. Two terrorists from Miami, who had the objectives of sabotaging tourist shops as a means of creating fear and panic among tourists, were caught with weapons and communication devices.
December 29, 1991. 3 terrorists of the Miami based terrorist group Commandos L were captured with arms and explosives.
These men along with 50 to 60 other men were trained in a camp situated on 168 street in Miami.
May 8 1992. Cuba denounces in the UN terrorists activities coming from within the US and circulates an official document in the Security Council, which terminates in a decision, taken previously on June 23, 1989 by the US Dept. of Justice, declaring inadmissible to allow Orlando Bosch to remain on US soil for his past and present ties to acts of terrorism including the downing of the Cuban airliner in 1976.
Actually, this terrorist walks the streets of Miami a free man due to the pardon he received from then president George Bush.
July 4, 1992. A terrorist group from the US is spotted by the Cuban coast guard of the coast of Havana, where upon they head to Varadero then veer to the US. Later they are rescued by the US coast guard when their boat experiences mechanical failure.
Even though weapons, maps and videos of their trip were confiscated they were freed by the FBI.
July 1992. A Miami terrorist's plan of sabotage in the Province de Villa Clara is foiled.
He had weapons and explosives and had the collaboration of the " Hermanos al Rescate ", who informed him of the location of the US coast guard, as to facilitate his entry into Cuba.
September 9, 1992. A Cuban-American who was detained by the FBI for illegal possession of arms and for the violation of the Neutrality Act is freed without charges.
October 7, 1992. A speed boat originating from Miami machine guns Hotel Melia Varadero. 4 terrorists are detained and interrogated by the FBI. But later are freed.
October 19, 1992. 3 terrorists from the US are captured along with an abundance of weapons and explosives. At the same time 3 other terrorists are captured in the Bahamas were they were found carrying arms and explosives bound for Cuba. These bands have left Miami on October 17.
January 1993. 5 terrorists are captured by the US coastguard with heavy machine guns and other weapons as they were heading for the Cuban coast. They were also set free.
January 7, 1993. Tony Bryant, leader of the terrorist group "Comandos L", announced in a press conference in Miami of plans to attack Cuba especially hotels, warning that from this moment on they were declaring war on Cuba, and warning tourists to stay away.
April 2, 1993. A tanker from Cypress is machined gunned, 7 miles of the coast of Matanza, by a boat sailed by Cuban -American terrorists.
May 18, 1993. A plane flown by the "Hermanos al Rescate" illegally flies into Cuban airspace .
May 21, 1993. US Customs arrest 9 terrorists as they were ready to sail to Cuba with weapons and explosives. On the 21 of August Judge Lawrence King dismisses the charges.
May 1993. "Hermanos al Rescate" plan to dynamite an electrical tower in the San Nicolás de Bari zone of Havana.
October 1993. "Hermanos al Rescate" publicly incite people to assassinate President Fidel Castro and to carry out attacks against Cuba, as well as ratifying their willingness to take on the risk this entails. The head of the US based exile terrorist group Alpha 66, Andrés Nazario Sargén, declared that his organizations had carried out 5 terrorist actions against Cuba.
October 18, 1993. A terrorist, a US resident, who had planned violent actions in Cuba is detained.
November 7, 1993. Humberto Pérez spokesman of Alpha 66 declares in Miami news conference that the war on Cuba will be extended to any tourist who visits the island, affirming that " those who stay in hotels will be considered enemies".
