Exile terrrorism
1993. A Cuban resident visiting the US is recluted by a terrorist organization to carry out acts of sabotage inside of Cuba in the tourist and agricultural sectors. He was given equipment and a sum of 20,000 to carry out the terrorist actions.
March 11, 1994. A terrorist group from Miami machine guns the Hotel "Guitart Cayo Coco".
April 17, 1994. Planes of "Hermanos al Rescate" fly very low over the city of Havana and set off smoke bombs. In the following months of 1994 they violate on 7 different occassions Cuban airspace.
September 4, 1994. Two terrorists proceeding from the US infiltrate the zone of Caibarién, Villa Clara. They were captured with a great deal of weapons and explosives.
October 6, 1994. Another armed group from Florida opens fire from a speed boat on the Hotel "Guitart Cayo Coco".
October 15, 1994. An armed group of terrorists proceeding from the US disembarks in the terraplain "Cayo Santa María" Caibarién, Villa Clara, and they assassinate Arcelio Rodríguez García.
October 1994. "Hermanos al Rescate" trains the members of a counterrevolutionary organization in Florida, with the purpose of carrying out acts of sabotage against the petroleum refinery in Cienfuegos.
In November of the same year they had planned to assassinate President Fidel castro and other leaders and to introduce arms and explosives into Cuba.
November 1994. Terrorist Luis Posada Carriles and 5 other accomplices introduce arms in Cartagena, Colombia, during the IV Conference of Heads of States of Iberoamerica, to assassinate president Fidel Castro. Security at the conference which kept him at a distance spoiled the plot. Posada Carriles later declares in the NY Times that, " I was standing in front of some reporters and I saw a friend of Castro, García Márquez. I was only able to see Castro from afar".
November 11, 1994. Four terrorists were arrested after reaching the coast of Varadero, Matanzas. They were captured with arms and ammunitions.
March 2, 1995. Two terrorists proceeding from the US were caught with 51 lbs. of C-4 explosives and other materials.
4 de April 4, 1995. A light plane C-337 violate Cuban airspace entering by the north of Havana.
May 20, 1995. Once again the Hotel "Guitart Cayo Coco" are attacked by terrorists aboard a speed boat.
July 12, 1995. 3 Terrorists are detained in the US when they tried to enter Cuban waters as provacative activities were iniated by Miami organizations of the coast of Cuba. Even though they were caught with arms and explosives they were set free.
July 13, 1995. Organized by the "Hermanos al Rescate", 11 boats, 6 small planes and 2 helicópteros proceeding from the US, entered Cuban waters and cuban airspace. One of the planes flew over the city of Havana and hurled propaganda.
December 16, 1995. Two terrorists, who had plans of entering the island thru Pinar del Río, were detained and found to have arms and explosives in the US, were later freed by American authorities.
January 9, 1996. Two planes proceeding from Opa-locka, Florida violate Cuban airspace.
January 12, 1996. A Cuban-American is detained as he was preparing to transport explosives from the city of Havana to Pinar del Río.
January 13, 1996. Planes of "Hermanos al Rescate" violate Cuban airspace and fly over Havana.Terrorist Basulto declared afterwards, " They say that I flew over Cuban territory, something the whole world knows and that I have never denied.
January 23, 1996. US authorities intercept in Cayo Maratón a boat with 5 armed terrorists as they were heading for Cuba. They were freed by the FBI very same day.
February 11, 1996. Three terrorists who had fired shots against the coast were seized by troops.
February 24, 1996. A new violation by the "Hermanos al Rescate". 3 small planes fly over close to an urban center in Havana and soon thereafter they are shot downed. In the previous 20 months before this incident, at least 25 violations of Cuban airspace had occurred. .
June 26, 1996. In a session of the Organization Civil Aviation the president of the investigaive branch of the organization afirms that at least one of the planes utilized by the "Hermanos al Rescate" in the airport of Opa-locka still has the insignia of USAF.
August 21, 1996. A US citizen is detained in Cuba, for having introduced illegally and secretly military equipment, which was to be utilized in terrorist acts.
September 16, 1996. A boat loaded with arms and ammunitions is seized in Punta Alegre, Ciego de Ävila.
October 21, 1996. A small plane type SS-RR numbered N3093M property of the Dept. of State of the US, flies 25-30 kilometers south of varadero and sprays a mist carrying a agricultural plague named Thip Palmi Karny.
November 1996. TV Channel 23 of Miami, interviews live Luis Posada Carriles and Orlando Bosch. They state their intentions of carrying on their terrorist activities agaisnt Cuba.
April 12, 1997. A bomb explodes in the Hotel "Melia Cohíba" in the city of Havana.
April 30, 1997. An explosive device is found in the Hotel "Melía Cohíba".
July 12, 1997. Bombs explode in the Hotels "Capri" and "Nacional".
August 4, 1997. Another bomb explodes in the hotel "Melía Cohíba".
August 11, 1997. The Miami press publishes a declaration by the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF) supporting unconditionally the terrorist acts against civilian and tourist objectives in Cuba. The president of the CANF declares that, "we do not consider those actions terrorist" adding that any action against Cuba was legitimate.
August 22, 1997. Explosion at the Hotel "Sol Palmeras" de Varadero.
September 4, 1997. Bombs explode in the Hotels "Tritón", "Chateau Miramar" and "Copacabana". In the last hotel as the consequence of this terrorist act, young Italian tourist Fabio Di Celmo is killed. This same day a bomb explodes in the restaurant "La Bodeguita del Medio".
September 10, 1997. The Cuban Government announces the arrest of the Salvadorian citizen, Raúl Cruz León, for the detonation of 6 bombs around the capital and for causing the death of Fabio Di Celmo. Cruz León admited that he had been paid 4 500 dólares for placing each bomb.
October 19, 1997. An explosive device was found in a small tourist bus.
